Liam Jurrah

AFL star

2010 NT Young Australian of the Year

Warlpiri man Liam Jurrah is the first player from a remote community in Central Australia to be drafted by the AFL. Before this, Liam had not trained with elite training squads; instead he spent evenings at one end of the local Yuendumu basketball court kicking a footy through the hoop. He is the proud product of his local football mentors and the remote red dirt oval of his community. Liam supports other children to develop their skills too.

Since he was 16, he has been a member of the Jaru Pirrjirdi (Strong Voices) Youth Development and Leadership Project. In this capacity he has coordinated and umpired hundreds of hours of sporting activities. He also works as a youth mentor with at-risk Warlpiri youth facing serious life issues. Liam, known affectionately as the Warlpiri Wizard, is living proof for remote kids that if you put your mind to it you can achieve your wildest dreams.
