Finding Australians making a positive difference in their communities
The 2016 Young Australians of the Year, Orange Sky Laundry founders Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett, are on a mission to find Australians doing great things in their community and worthy of nomination in the 2017 Australian of the Year Awards.
The pair will drive one of their Orange Sky Laundry vans more than 2000kms, starting in Brisbane on Monday 4 July and finishing in Melbourne on Friday 8 July 2016.
They’ll pass through Lismore, Armidale, Tamworth, Newcastle, Wollongong, Goulburn and Albury-Wodonga. Along the way, Nic and Lucas will meet local communities and encourage people to submit Australian of the Year Award nominations for Australians who are making a difference in their community and who are the backbone of every town.
Look out for the Orange Sky Laundry van and the Australian of the Year Awards bus as they pass through your community. Come along to meet 2016 Young Australians of the Year Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett and other Australian of the Year Award Alumni who will make guest appearances.
You can chat with Nic and Lucas, find out more about Orange Sky Laundry and pick up a postcard to submit a nomination for someone in your community who should be considered for the 2017 Australian of the Year Awards.
“We’re looking forward to meeting people in communities along the way and seeing the work of fellow volunteer groups and local community organisations,” said Nic.
“It’s the unsung local heroes and the quiet achievers in each community who deserve to be nominated for the Australian of the Year Awards and we’re hoping to encourage people to submit nominations for these people, whether it’s by picking up a nominations postcard from us while we’re in town or by going online to australianoftheyear.org.au to submit a nomination.
“What we’d really like is to meet some of these people in each community, so if there’s someone you know that deserves to be recognised, bring them along to see us while we’re in town so we can say well done and hear more about what they do and how they contribute to the local community.”
The Australian of the Year Awards rely on the public to submit nominations for fellow Australians they would like to see recognised in four Award categories:
- Australian of the Year
- Senior of the Year (65 years and over)
- Young Australian (16 - 30 years)
- Australia’s Local Hero
One nomination is all it takes for an individual to be in the running for the Awards.
Nominations can be made at australianoftheyear.org.au until midnight 7 August 2016.
If you do not have access to the internet, you can call the National Australia Day Council on 02 6120 0600 for assistance to submit a nomination.
