Keelan MailmanState: Queensland
As the first female Aboriginal cattle station manager, Keelan Mailman cares for 2,300 head of cattle at Mt Tabor Station, an award winning Indigenous Land Corporation property run under licence to her Bidjara people. Keelan learnt how to fence, use a chainsaw, change and fi x tyres, and all the other skills needed to manage a 72,000 hectare property while also continuing her cultural work of identifying and cataloguing cultural sites on the property. She is foster mother to four nieces and a nephew as well as mother to her own children. She helps the younger kids of the Charleville community who are in trouble by taking them to the property to learn about the land and they come from. She also takes in elders who need a home to go to for a while. Keelan is keen to show traditional owners how cultural and commercial interests can work together.
