Young Australian of the Year
2011 WA Young Australian of the Year Nominee
Matthew LuttonTown: Doubleview
State: Western Australia
Matthew Lutton is the next big thing in the WA arts scene. At just 19 he was appointed artistic director of Black Swan State Theatre Company’s BSX program which was aimed at developing the talents of young artists. Matthew also started his own theatre company, ThinIce, at the age of 17 while still at school. Based in Perth, ThinIce is now one of Australia’s most progressive theatre companies with triennial funding from both state and federal governments. Matthew rallies for WA to be taken notice of on the national arts scene and included in major arts events around the country. With every production by ThinIce he collaborates with artists and organisations from other states in order to break down these barriers. He has now successfully established ThinIce as the Sydney Theatre Company’s first associate company. Matthew also volunteers his time to work with students and teachers in schools and mentors other aspiring artists. In 2008, he became the youngest member to be appointed to the Australia Council’s Theatre Board, and received a prestigious commission to create a contemporary opera with the Czech composer Miroslav Srnka, which will premier in Munich at the State Opera. He was recently named one of Australia’s five up-and-coming directors.
