Father Bob Maguire AM RFD

Town: South Melbourne
State: Victoria

Priest

Father Bob Maguire is one of Australia’s best-loved and most well-respected priests. More than 27 years ago he founded Open Family Australia which supports young people and their families with drug education, prevention and diversion services. His lifetime goal has been to provide basic human relationships to young people who have been rejected by their family, the education system, and the welfare system. He has since founded two other response units for the community, Emerald Hill Mission in 1989 and Beyond Care in 2003. These units provide meals for up to 70 disadvantaged people five times a week, as well as food parcels, food vouchers and financial relief for schooling of a dozen public housing children. In 2003, he established the Fr Bob Maguire Foundation to gather all his social investments under one umbrella and the Bob Squad was born, inspired by Father Bob’s revolutionary approach to social justice. Father Bob is co-host of Sunday Night Safran on national youth radio station Triple J, just one example of the way he relates to people across all generations. An outspoken advocate for the poor and disadvantaged, at the age of 75 Father Bob shows no signs of slowing down.
