Michael Turtur OAMTown: Medindie Gardens
State: South Australia
A visit to the velodrome at the age of 12 captivated Mike Turtur and sparked his life-long passion for the sport of cycling. He went on to be a very successful cyclist, including winning gold in the 400m Team Pursuit at the 1984 Olympic Games. Following his cycling career, Mike Turtur turned his attention to growing the sport in Australia. As Director of the Tour Down Under, Mike has developed the event over the last 12 years to become the biggest cycling race in the Southern Hemisphere. The first stop on the world cycling calendar, the Tour Down Under event has had a significant impact on tourism to Adelaide. In 2008, it became the first event outside cycling’s traditional home of Europe to join the prestigious UCI ProTour. Mike has also shared his knowledge and experience as the South Australian Institute of Sport cycling coach and as manager of the Adelaide Super- Drome. He is now President of the Oceania Cycling Confederation and sits on the management committee of the International Cycling Union. Mike is one of our greatest promoters and organisers of road and track events.
