Dr Hagen Stehr AOState: South Australia
Australian seafood industry leader
Dr Hagen Stehr AO has an unwavering passion for fishing and aquaculture. Arriving in Port Lincoln as a penniless merchant sailor from Germany, Hagen jumped ship in 1960 and is now one of South Australia's wealthiest men.
Starting as a tuna poler, Hagen founded his own company, Australian Tuna fisheries (Stehr Group) in 1969, developing an excellent international reputation. Through his Clean Seas Tuna company, he found a way to breed his own Southern Bluefin Tuna, Australian Yellowtail Kingfish and Mulloway.
Hagen has engaged in extensive research and development into farming fish, and founded and chairs the Australian Maritime and Fishing Academy. He was Awarded Officer of the Order of Australia in 1997 for his service to the commercial fishing industry, education and training, the Centenary Medal for community service in 2000, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Sunshine Coast.
Hagen's boundless energy and vision has made a substantial contribution to South Australia's fishing and aquaculture industry.
