Jolyn PhillippsState: South Australia
Founder, Lion Hearts Learning
In 2017, Jolyn Phillips' two-year old daughter Codee-Jo was diagnosed with leukaemia. Like other children with cancer, Codee-Jo's weakened immune system meant she had to be isolated or around very few people during treatment.
Despite suffering financial, emotional and mental stress at the time, Jolyn started Lion Hearts Learning (LHL) – an educational play group for Codee-Jo and other families in the same situation. Set up like a preschool, where parents do not attend, LHL was South Australia's first not-for-profit playgroup for children and those directly affected by cancer. LHL is based in Jolyn's family home.
LHL provides a safe, clean, learning environment for these children. It has grown from a weekly gathering of a few children, to a twice-weekly playgroup of 14 children with three educators, and regular special guest educators and entertainers.
In their spare time, Jolyn and her team also raise funds for the organisation, offering fun learning, new skills and friends for oncology children.
