Eman Rahim

State: South Australia

Founder, Heart & Soul Group

Eman Rahim is the inspiration and driving force behind the Heart and Soul Community Group, which feeds more than 2,600 people a week in need across South Australia.

After escaping an arranged marriage and domestic violence with her young son, Eman turned to shoplifting for food. Afraid that she would be imprisoned and lose her child, Eman found work in a café – it was here that she started making sandwiches for homeless people in Whitmore Square.

Eman’s desire to reach more of Adelaide’s homeless population led her to contact SecondBite, a national organisation that directs surplus food to other organisations. From here, she founded Heart & Soul Group, collecting food donated by supermarkets, restaurants, farmers, wholesalers and caterers.

From its humble beginnings giving out sandwiches, Eman’s not-for-profit organisation now has three trucks on the road and runs weekly free food markets at five locations. She works voluntarily for up to 15 hours a day as the chair and chief executive.
