Emily Carter and June Oscar

Town: Fitzroy Crossing
State: Western Australia

Indigenous campaigners

Emily Carter and June Oscar are a force to be reckoned with. After their remote community of Fitzroy Crossing experienced 13 suicides in 13 months they decided enough was enough. Family violence and child abuse was commonplace and alcohol abuse was increasing. They began lobbying for alcohol restrictions despite fierce community opposition, and their success in implementing these restrictions has lead to sweeping changes in the health, safety and wellbeing of their community. Alcohol-related domestic violence is now down by 43 per cent and the number of people seeking emergency health assistance due to alcohol-related injuries has been halved.

Yajilarra, a documentary made about Emily and June’s achievements, which premiered at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York, has inspired people world-wide. Emily and June have demonstrated bravery and determination to save lives and change their community for the better.
