Australian of the Year

2010 WA Australian of the Year Nominee

Dr Gary Hewett OAM

Town: Glen Forest
State: Western Australia

Charity founder

Dr Gary Hewett is a Perth dental surgeon who first visited Cambodia as a medical volunteer in 1995 and was so moved by what he saw that on returning to Australia he established Awareness Cambodia. The organisation’s goal is to improve the health and educational infrastructure in the rural region of Kompong Speu, and make a difference in the lives of Cambodia’s children. Its first major project was the creation of Sunshine House, an orphanage for children orphaned due to AIDS.

The Eco Farm attached to it has a pig breeding program that provides income for the orphanage. Awareness Cambodia has also set up the House of Progress, for young adults transitioning from Sunshine House to high school education, and the Operation Nightingale Medical Clinics which provide medical services to the local community. Gary now only works one day a week as a dental surgeon, spending the remainder of his week selflessly working for the people of Cambodia.
