Doctor helping homeless people

If there was a script available to cure homelessness, Dr Andrew Davies would write it. Instead, he decided to do the next best thing. In 2008, Andrew launched Homeless Healthcare, a charity that provides health services to homeless and marginalised people in Perth. Andrew took a leap of faith, starting with eight hours of clinical services a week. Today, he leads a team of 20 people who provide 14,000 consultations each year at drop-in centres across the city. Andrew also started Street Health, a service which offers nursing care that helps people living on the street with dressings, vaccinations and general medical support. Two thirds of people Andrew treats have mental health issues, drug and alcohol abuse diagnoses, and around half have chronic health problems. Andrew’s vision is to improve the health of homeless people, and to train health professionals to meet their needs. It’s a challenging job, but one which Andrew says is also the most rewarding.
