Young Australian of the Year

2018 WA Young Australian of the Year Nominee

Greg Hire

State: Western Australia

Basketball player and youth mental health advocate

On the basketball court, Greg Hire is a championship-winning member of the Perth Wildcats national basketball team. Away from the arena, Greg has dedicated himself to helping young people. As an ambassador for Youth Focus, Greg has become a powerful advocate for young people dealing with mental health challenges. In 2014, the Wildcats’ Vice Captain established A Stitch in Time, a not-for-profit organisation focused on mentoring, building resilience and promoting positive mental wellbeing. Greg helps people find pathways to success, while lending his voice to reduce stigma and diminish barriers around mental health. In off-seasons, Greg travels to remote communities to run resilience workshops and help communities develop strategies to combat youth suicide. He has also developed a sports leadership program that emphasises mental health, speaks regularly to students in high schools and is formulating a resilience program for at-risk young people. With quiet determination, Greg is helping to change the mental health landscape in Western Australia.
