Dr Nick GottardoState: Western Australia
Paediatric oncologist and brain cancer researcher
Driven by a belief that it’s unacceptable for children to die from brain cancer, Dr Nick Gottardo has devoted his professional life to finding a cure for children’s brain cancer. A paediatric oncologist and neuro oncologist at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children in Perth, Nick is one of the world’s leading researchers into a disease responsible for more deaths in children than any other. Referred to as ‘Saint Nick’ by parents at the ward, Nick’s compassion, kindness and understanding helps patients and their families through the most difficult of times. As if being an amazing doctor isn’t enough, Nick also co-heads the Telethon Kids Institute's brain tumour research team. In 2017, Nick and his team made a breakthrough in treating one of the most devastating childhood brain cancers – medulloblastoma. Nick’s study screened almost 3,200 existing drugs to find one capable of destroying medulloblastoma. While it’s early days, this discovery may lead to a new class of drugs used to treat medulloblastoma in the clinic.
