Senior Australian of the Year

2018 NSW Senior Australian of the Year Nominee

Don Spencer OAM

State: New South Wales

Singer, songwriter and musical educator

A household name to generations of children, Don Spencer uses his musical talents to ensure all young Australians have access to the uplifting joys of music. A host of Playschool on ABC TV for 28 years, and 17 years on BBC TV, Don is the only person who has presented Playschool in England and Australia. He also hosted the long-running ABC children’s radio show Kindergarten of the Air. Don has written, recorded and produced many gold and platinum albums and DVDs for children. In 2002, Don established the Australian Children's Music Foundation to inspire creativity and imagination through music education classes for disadvantaged children and youth at risk. Don's work takes music education into rural and inner-city schools where students battle with social and economic isolation, to drop in centres and juvenile detention centres, and to the Sydney Children's Hospital, where music therapy brightens the day of severely ill children. Through an inclusive and engaging approach to music, Don is changing lives.
