Brian MyersonState: New South Wales
Organ transplant advocate
A kidney and pancreas transplant recipient, Brian Myerson has spent more than a decade pursuing world leading practice to improve Australia’s organ donation rate. Frustrated by Australia's organ donation shortfall, Brian co-founded ShareLife Australia in 2006, bringing together some of Australia's leading business and medical brains to solve structural issues within the organ donation system. ShareLife developed a plan based on international best practice, and successfully lobbied the Australian Government to provide $150 million to fund the plan. Brian continues to work with Federal and State Governments to improve organ donation processes and align Australia's system with the best in the world. He has fought a difficult battle to change hospital culture and triggered an inquiry into the management of the national reform plan in 2015. More than 12,000 Australians suffer each year while on transplant waiting lists or dialysis. While Australia’s rate of organ donation and transplantation languishes at 17th in the world, Brian remains determined to help other people receive the gift of life.
