Lucy HaslamTown: Tamworth
State: New South Wales
Married to a police officer who served in the drug squad, retired nurse Lucy Haslam is an unlikely but fervent medical cannabis activist. After her son Dan was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2010, Lucy discovered that cannabis was the only medicine which relieved his acute nausea and vomiting and improved his quality of life. With steely resolve, Lucy helped her son launch the Dan’s Story campaign, lobbying all levels of Government to decriminalize medicinal cannabis for the sick, driving support for an online petition and raising funds to host Australia’s first medical cannabis symposium in her home town of Tamworth. In October 2015, the NSW Government announced a new trial of medicinal cannabis for thirty terminally ill people being cared for by Newcastle's Calvary Mater Hospital. The Federal Government has also announced it will legalise the growing of cannabis for medicinal purposes. Sadly Dan passed away in February 2015. Despite her personal loss, Lucy has not slowed her campaign, and instead is building momentum for Australia-wide change. By sharing her family’s experiences with lawmakers, journalists and politicians, Lucy has triggered a national conversation and is shifting the public perception of medical marijuana.
