Dr Miriam‐Rose Ungunmerr‐Baumann AMState: Northern Territory
Educator and artist
As a child, Dr Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann learnt to read the landscape as well as the pages of her textbooks and the whole bush was her school. Despite never attending secondary school, Miriam-Rose became the Northern Territory’s first Indigenous school teacher and principal of St Francis Xavier in her home community of Nauiyu, Daly River. After studying to become a teacher’s aide in 1968, Miriam-Rose commenced her career at St Francis Xavier, going on to obtain a Bachelor and Master of Education Degree and was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Northern Territory University. A talented musician, visual artist and illustrator, for many years Miriam-Rose was the Northern Territory’s Education Department’s art consultant. Driven by a determination to ensure her people have the opportunity to become qualified teachers and manage their own schools, Miriam-Rose’s own school embodies this philosophy. Influenced by her bush-tracker uncle, Miriam-Rose teaches both western and traditional ways, passionately believing that education is a matter for the whole community.
