Dr Elizabeth Cameron Dalman OAMState: Australian Capital Territory
Dancer and choreographer
An internationally-renowned choreographer, teacher and performer, Dr Elizabeth Cameron Dalman OAM is widely recognised as the pioneer of modern dance in Australia. Defying the mainstream arts community, which was scathingly critical, Elizabeth began teaching modern dance as a vehicle for Australian artists to express a changing national identity and respond to the issues in the socio-political environment of the day. Founding the Australian Dance Theatre in Adelaide in 1965, Elizabeth led the company for 10 years as its Artistic Director and Chief Choreographer. Alongside a public performance program she established a Dance-in-Education program, touring the company nationally on a regular basis and internationally to Europe, India, SE-Asia and New Zealand. After living and working in Europe for a decade, Elizabeth returned to Australia in 1987, establishing the Mirramu Creative Arts Centre in 1990 and Mirramu Dance Company in 2000. Today, Elizabeth uses her art to express her commitment to human rights, reconciliation, gender equality and environmental sustainability.
