Jean Little OAM

State: Queensland

Indigenous advocate

Embarking on a career as a nurse after training at the St Andrews War Memorial Hospital in Brisbane, Jean Little developed skills in substance use and abuse management that has driven a lifetime’s work.  Focusing on prevention rather than simply on clinical treatment, Jean’s holistic approach the treatment of substance abuse and use has taken her across the nation.  Jean’s work as a life member of the Alcohol and Drug Council of Australia culminated in 2012 with her election to the Board as the first Aboriginal Director.  A vocal commentator on Aboriginal issues, Jean’s contributions to her community have extended to the Cairns Deaths in Custody Watch Group, the Thancoupie Bursary Committee that facilitates the skills of emerging young Western Cape Aboriginal Artists, and conducting cultural awareness education.  Throughout her life’s work Jean continues to marry her traditional cultural learnings with those of the broader Australian community to uphold the pride and dignity of her people.
