Young Australian of the Year Leads Sydney Anzac Day Commemorations
Victoria Cross recipient and Young Australian of the Year 2010 Trooper Mark Donaldson VC will attend the Sydney Dawn Service and take part in the Sydney ANZAC Day March on Sunday 25 April 2010.
Trooper Donaldson VC will march alongside RSL NSW President Don Rowe OAM at the front of the March, immediately behind March Leader His Excellency Mr James Spigelman, Lieutenant Governor of NSW and March Commander RADM Steve Gilmore, Commander of the Australian Fleet.
Trooper Mark Donaldson, VC has urged Australia’s younger veterans to fully participate in ANZAC Day commemorations around Australia.
“It’s really important that the ANZAC Spirit is kept alive,” said Trooper Donaldson, who is a member of the Dorrigo sub-branch of the RSLNSW.
“A lot of the new veterans from Iraq, Afghanistan and our peacekeeping operations in East Timor and the Solomon Islands are younger members of the ADF and it’s up to them to keep the tradition alive and growing.
“If you aren’t with your unit, then join your fellow veterans at the marches being held in our capital cities and towns throughout the country.”
President of the RSL NSW, Don Rowe said it was a great honour for Sydney to have Trooper Donaldson VC taking part in the city’s march this year and hoped his presence would encourage other young veterans to take their rightful place in the march or at ANZAC Day commemorations around the state.
“Trooper Donaldson is a great example of the calibre of young men and women who continue to make Australia proud through their service in ongoing areas of conflict around the world and in peacekeeping operations,” said Mr Rowe.
“It’s important that this latest generation of servicemen and servicewomen, who give of their time and risk their lives, know they are respected as much as any other generation of veterans.”
