WA Young Australian of the Year wins Churchill Fellowship
Congratulations to WA Young Australian of the Year 2006, Simone McMahon, who was recently awarded the 3000th Churchill Fellowship.
Simone will travel to the UK, Spain and the USA to identify and document successful models of organ and tissue donation and to assess promotional strategies and programs that provide support to transplant recipients, donor families and living donors.
"I am very excited about this opportunity as there is much knowledge to be gained from other countries that are rapidly progressing in the field of organ and tissue donation especially Spain which has the highest organ donation rate in the world", said Simone - a kidney recipient herself.
"I hope to be able to bring back all the knowledge I gain overseas so it may be adapted to Australia to improve the current low organ donation rates we have here at present. I also hope my experience will enable me to look at possible strategies and programs that can be implemented to improve the lives of those Australians involved in the transplantation process, including recipients, donor familles and living donors".
