Vale Rhonda Obad OAM – ACT finalist Senior Australian of the Year 2013
The National Australia Day Council is saddened to learn of the passing of Rhonda Obad OAM, ACT finalist in the Australian of the Year Awards 2013, at the age of 64.
Following the tragedy of her son Tony’s death from a heroin overdose, Rhonda Obad dedicated her life to helping young men who other people have given up on. She established the Bridge Back to Life Foundation in a north Canberra suburb to help young homeless men. In 2011, supported by local business and community donations, Tony’s Place opened its doors.
“Rhonda helped change the lives of many young men and it has been a privilege to honour her as a state finalist in this year’s Awards.” National Australia Day Council CEO Graham West said.“She has left us with an inspiring legacy.”
“Our thoughts are with Rhonda’s family and friends.”
The ACT Australian of the Year Awards 2013 presentation will be held at a function at the Hyatt Hotel, Canberra on 21 November, 2012.
