Vale Dr John Buckingham
One of Canberra's most renowned surgeons and former ACT Senior Australian of the Year, Dr John Buckingham, has passed away at his home at 63 years of age.
Known across Australia for his work in breast cancer surgery and diagnosis, he was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer earlier this year.
Dr Buckingham was named the ACT Senior Australian of the Year in 2010 for his groundbreaking work in diagnosing lymph node involvement with breast cancer diagnosis. He was also one of the first to demonstrate the value of CT scanning in the early diagnosis of appendicitis both here and overseas and was involved in establishing Breast Screen ACT.
Dr Buckingham was best known in Canberra for his warm bedside manner, caring nature and meticulous follow-up care of patients.
“Dr Buckingham was much loved by the Canberra community and his work in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment has touched the lives of many. He will be sorely missed,” said Tam Johnston, Program Director at the National Australia Day Council.
The National Australia Day Council’s thoughts are with Dr Buckingham’s family and friends.
