The Prime Minister officially launches the opening of the nomination period at Old Parliament House

The Prime Minster officially launched the opening of the nomination period on Saturday 12 July.

The launch, held in Kings Hall of Old Parliament House, was attended by Australian of the Year 2008, Lee Kernaghan, and Senior Australian of the Year 2008, David Bussau, as well as a number of other past recipients and partners and supporters of the Awards.

Annette Dowton, the central NSW midwife who nominated Lee Kernaghan last year, also attended the launch and received heartfelt thanks from the man she helped to become Australian of the Year 2008.

"It's an incredible feeling, thank you for believing in me," he said to Mrs. Dowton in a very public thank you. 


The Acting Chair of the National Australia Day Council, Shelly Reys said there could be no award without nominations.

"Now is the time to really think about who you think could inspire our nation, and who you think is the best and brightest."
