Simon McKeon - Australian of the Year 2011
With Australia Day just around the corner, it’s timely to look back on Simon McKeon’s time as the 2011 Australian of the Year. There’s no doubt he has set a very high benchmark, speaking at more than 300 community and corporate events since 26 January last year. While he freely admits it’s been an exhausting whirlwind of engagements, often two or three in a day, he says it’s also been amazingly fruitful.
‘It’s been such an honour this past year to meet and talk with people all around the country from schoolchildren to elderly Australians. I’m privileged to have had the opportunity to share my thoughts about a range of topics including my belief that business and philanthropy should be natural companions.’
As Australian of the Year, Simon has spoken out in favour of the disability insurance scheme, expressed his support for an Australian republic and backed the global effort to eradicate polio. He also spent several days surviving on just $2 a day for food to better understand the plight of the homeless.
Simon has certainly embraced his role and we thank him for his generosity and commitment as he prepares to pass the baton to the 2012 Australian of the Year.
