Over 3300 nominations received for the Awards

The National Australia Day Council has received over 3300 nominations for the Australian of the Year Awards 2009.

"We have received many wonderful nominations for extraordinary people from all walks of life," said Shelley Reys, Acting Chair of the National Australia Day Council Board.

"Thank you to everyone who nominated someone who makes them proud."

The next step to finding the Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year and Australia's Local Hero is the state and territory selection process.

Those who are chosen as state and territory recipients will become the national finalists for the Awards which will be announced in Canberra on 25 January.
