NADC statement regarding Jack Charles, 2016 Victorian Senior Australian of the Year
Jack Charles was awarded 2016 Victorian Senior Australian of the Year for his work as an Aboriginal elder, actor and role model at an event last night which was attended by the Governor of Victoria Her Excellency the Hon Linda Dessau AM; the Premier of Victoria, The Hon Daniel Andrews MP and other dignitaries.
The National Australia Day Council was greatly disappointed to hear of Jack's experience after leaving the Awards event, when a taxi driver demanded that Jack pay his fare up front because he is Aboriginal.
No one deserves to be subject to this sort of behaviour, especially a proud Australian like Jack Charles who, just minutes before, was being celebrated for his important role as a leader in our community.
The National Australia Day Council can not tolerate racist attitudes and calls on all Australians to take a stand against any form of racist discrimination. It should not be tolerated.
I have expressed our deep disappointment to Jack's manager and hope this incident has not tainted our celebration and respect for Jack and all that he does for Australian society.
