Minister for Immigration and Citizenship supports the Local Hero Award

5 August 2008

The Local Hero Award is proudly sponsored by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans, sees the award as an opportunity to celebrate the work of ordinary Australians.

"The Local Hero Award provides an important way of acknowledging Australians who are making a real difference to the lives of those around them.

"That's what being an Australian citizen is all about - giving something back to the community we share," he said.

"Everyday we meet outstanding citizens who inspire us with the passion they have for this country. These men and women work tirelessly in their community to make it a better place. They bring people together in hard times, share the good times, and think of others first to help strengthen their communities, demonstrating active citizenship," Senator Evans said.
