Message from the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship The Hon. Chris Bowen MP

17 January 2012

As the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship it is a great honour to once again be involved in the Australian of the Year Awards as a proud sponsor of Australia’s Local Hero Award for the 10th year running.
All of the State and Territory Local Hero finalists embody what makes Australia great.  They are quiet achievers who step forward when they see someone who needs a hand, and they do it without wanting recognition or acknowledgement.  These Local Heroes set an example to us all by showing strength and compassion for their fellow Australians.
All of the finalists have contributed enormously and generously to their local communities and show what being a great Australian citizen is all about.
On behalf of the nation, I give all the finalists my heartfelt thanks, and wish them all the best in the lead up to the national announcement on Australia Day eve 2012.
