Mandawuy Yunupingu's "Healing Stone"
Yunipingu was the first Aboriginal person from Arnhem Land to get a university degree (1987), the first Aboriginal School Principal in Australia (1990), and previous singer of multiple ARIA Award winners, Yothu Yindi, but has only performed rarely since suffering from kidney failure in 2009. The singer has been candid about his battle with chronic alcoholism and will perform a new song at the NIMA ceremony, Healing Stone, which chronicles his recovery from the illness. Mandawuy hopes the song will “encourage indigenous people to look after themselves."
Indigenous artists from all around the country are encouraged to nominate themselves in the National Indigenous Music Awards 2011. Nominations close on July 22 and the winners will be announced on August 19. Further information can be obtained at www.nima.musicnt.com.au
