Less than two weeks until the Australian of the Year Awards are announced

With less than two weeks until the Australian of the Year Awards are announced on Australia Day Eve, the National Australia Day Council is gearing up for a great event.

Director of the Awards, Tam Johnston said "Preparations are well underway to announce the Australian of the Year Awards on the lawns of Parliament House on 25 January."

"We have 32 finalists coming to Canberra to join in the celebrations and await the announcement of the Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year and Australia's Local Hero for 2009."

The Awards announcement kicks off the start of the Australia Day Eve celebrations at 4.00pm followed by the Australia Day Live concert from 6.30pm. The concert features some of country's hottest performers - Wendy Matthews, Dan Kelly and the Ukeladies, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Jessica Mauboy will light up the stage with some new songs and old favourites.

Admission to the event is free, so come along to Federation Mall, Parliament House and watch as another inspiring Australian is announced the Australian of the Year 2009. Then kick on with 35,000 other Canberrans and celebrate Australia Day Eve.

The Awards will be broadcast on Channel Nine from 5pm. The Australia Day Live concert will be aired on Music Max at 8.00pm Australia Day and the Australia Day at the House concert on Channel Ten at 1.30pm on 31 January.
