Jonathon Welch judges Battle of the Choirs!

18 June 2008

Jonathon Welch, Australia's Local Hero 2008, judges a number of choral groups who battle it out on Channel Seven's new reality show Battle of the Choirs.

Jonathon was awarded Australia's Local Hero in recognition of his work with The Choir of Hard Knocks, a choir made up of homeless and disadvantaged singers from Melbourne, so he is certainly well qualified to judge Battle of the Choirs.

"It is a real honour to be invited to participate in this wonderful new passion project of Channel Seven - in fact it's a dream come true!" Jonathon said.

"To have the chance to help the value of choral music and singing on a national television show - and also the wonderful benefits that music has in creating friendships, and family in many cases in the broader community - is the realisation of a life long dream for me! What's more, it also shows to the whole nation just how fantastic our Choirs are and how Choirs have "come of age" with the diverse range of music that they can actually sing - and that we have some of the best Choirs in the world right here in Australia."

Jonathon joins fellow judges, Ice-House singer Iva Davies, ex-Hi Five star Charli Delaney and classically trained musician George Torbay in assessing choirs from all over Australia as they tackle different musical genres.

There are 16 choirs participating in the competition, with four choirs competing per episode. Each choir sings a number of songs in the episode, including a Surprise Medley which is revealed to them on the day!

The winning choir walks away with $100,000 and a recording contract with Universal Music.

Battle of the Choirs airs on Channel Seven at 7:30pm.
