Jessica Watson embarks on another global challenge
Young Australian of the Year 2011, Jessica Watson, has been announced as a youth representative for the United Nations World Food Program (WFP).
She met with Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd and WFP Deputy Executive Director Amir Abdulla at Parliament House in Canberra yesterday for the announcement.
In her new role, Jessica will focus on child hunger by raising awareness and funds for the WFP's school feeding programs. The program provides school meals to an average of 22 million children each year in about 60 countries.
The WFP is the world's largest humanitarian organisation fighting hunger worldwide.
It is hoped she will expose a new generation to the organisation's work through social media and by visiting communities in Australia and overseas.
This is the latest in a growing list of achievements for the 18 year old.
