Fred Hollows, Australian of the Year 1990, commemorated on a new one dollar coin
Renowned eye surgeon and Australian of the Year 1990, Fred Hollows, will be honoured on a new one dollar collector coin.
The coin, depicting Professor Hollows holding an intra-ocular lens, will be released by the Royal Australian Mint today at the opening of a Fred Hollows photographic exhibition at Parliament House.
In an interview with ABC News, Royal Australian Mint chief executive Ross MacDiarmid says the surgeon is an inspirational Australian worthy of the recognition.
"He was someone who actually developed a new technique to help people with cataracts and blindness, not just here with the Indigenous Australians but also with people around the world," he said.
