Cancer vaccine approved for sale

1 July 2006

Congratulations to Australian of the Year 2006, Professor Ian Frazer - the vaccine he invented to help prevent cervical cancer has been approved by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration. This means that the vaccine, known as Gardasil, could be available to Australian women as early as September this year.

"Cervical cancer affects half a million women each year. Ian's vaccine will change the lives of countless women, particularly in developing countries. We are so proud that this ground-breaking research was achieved right here in Australia. Ian truly is an Australian who makes us proud," said Lisa Curry-Kenny, Chair of the National Australia Day Council
