Australian of the Year and Young Australian of the Year 2011 visit Canberra and Yass

5 July 2011

Australian of the Year 2011 Simon McKeon and Young Australian of the Year 2011 Jessica Watson are in Canberra this week to visit school groups.  The visits are part of the Australian of the Year Awards program’s Tour of Honour, which brings recipients of the nation’s most respected honour into contact with school students and the community to share their inspiring stories.

The Tour of Honour will take Mr McKeon and Jessica to Giralang Primary School, Lanyon High School, Stromlo High School, Canberra High School and Wanniassa School. The pair will also visit the Australian Institute of Sport, travel to Yass for a Civic Reception and be guests at a reception hosted by the ACT Chief Minister.  Mr McKeon will also speak at a Canberra Business Council breakfast event.

Mr McKeon said he was looking forward to meeting school students and community members on the tour.

"One of the great joys of being Australian of the Year is the opportunity to meet and talk with young Australians - to see the work being done in our schools and hearing how our kids view the world while sharing lessons from our experiences with them," said Mr McKeon.

"I'm also very interested to meet local business leaders at the council event to discuss how community and business can work together for mutual benefit.

"Interaction is important for all of us - we can all learn from each other, inspire new ideas and make things happen together."

While in Canberra, Simon and Jessica will also help to launch the search for the next Australian of the Year Awards recipients, as nominations for the 2012 awards will officially open on Wednesday 6 July 2011.

Nominations for all award categories can be submitted until 31 August 2011. Click here for more information on nominating.
