Australian of the Year 1993, Mandawuy Yunupingu inspires others as he fights for his life
Australian of the Year 1993 and Yothu Yindi front man, Mandawuy Yunupingu is undergoing treatment for kidney disease, and wants to warn others of the dangers of drinking alcohol, eating unhealthily and doing no exercise.
Today, Yunupingu undergoes regular dialysis and hopes to heal and inspire again. As he said in The Sunday Telegraph on 18 October, “My message is take control of what you have, look after yourself, and maybe you will be much luckier than I am.
“Don’t consume what is not good for you – alcohol, sweet things, sugar, no exercise.”
Yunupingu says kidney disease is rife in remote Indigenous communities, and he hopes his story will motivate others to take care of themselves. He is spending his time writing songs and he aims to perform again soon.
The National Australia Day Council wishes Mandawuy all the best with his treatment.
