Senior Australian of the Year

Slim Dusty
1999 Award

Slim Dusty is a legend in his own time who is regarded with a deep warmth and affection by millions of Australians - far beyond even those who love his music. At age 11, David Gordon Kirkpatrick became Slim Dusty, the singing cowboy. At 72 years of age, he ignores retirement and continues to do what he loves. Performing, travelling and recording music to share with others has never been a job, but his life's joy.

For decades he has captured through his ballads and his personality much of the multi-faceted core of the Australian spirit. The mix of compassion, links to the "wide brown land", a roguish sense of humour and an intimate understanding of the Australian character combine to produce songs which every Australian can relate to. A blend recognised when he became the first Australian to have an international hit with his "Pub with No Beer". For over 50 years he has been recording Country Music hits and in that time he has released more than 90 albums - with around 5 million sales in Australia. In fact, just two months after open-heart surgery this year, he released his 99th album and is planning to release his 100th album in 2000. Slim still enjoys the life of travelling across Australia, and playing music with mates.

Slim was the first Australian to receive a gold record and the first singer to have his voice beamed from space when his recording of Waltzing Matilda was played from space shuttle Columbia. He has won more than 30 Golden guitars and more gold and platinum records and ARIA awards than any other Australian. He spearheaded the development of the Country Music Association of Australia and has been its Chairman since foundation.

He was one of the first six inductees to the ARIA Hall Of Fame, was awarded an MBE for his services to entertainment, is the 1999 Father Of The Year and is one of our 100 National Living treasures.

But more importantly, Slim is always helping others. Whether it be to make a special trip to visit the sick, play at a concert for those less fortunate or work with the Australian Heart Foundation, he has not just responded to requests for help, but has sought out opportunities to touch the lives of others throughout his career. When some may choose to sit back and reflect, Slim Dusty continues to share his life and enthusiasm with Australia. Slim Dusty is an outstanding Senior Australian who relates to all generations.
