Tehree Gordon 2004 Award Tehree Gordon sees herself as an ordinary Australian with a job to do - "caring for the environment, caring about other people, and caring about things that are important to the country."
It is her commitment to caring for others around her, both humans and animals, that has guaranteed her a very special place in the hearts of those around her. Since childhood, when she used to talk to the horses on her way home from school, she has had a special affinity for animals. The need to provide better care for a young kangaroo inspired her to purchase a property at Barwon Heads in Victoria in 1974. Thirty years on, the Jirrahlinga Koala and Wildlife Sanctuary is home to more than 300 native Australian animals. Countless other injured animals are also cared for and released. Her efforts have also extended to the creation of a helping hands program through which a team of volunteers look after the pets of people who are too ill or too elderly to care for their animals. But Tehree's work extends well beyond the animal world. Her commitment to caring for any who need her help is legendary. As Tehree says, "you don't need to be qualified to answer the phone and listen when someone needs you." Tehree recognises that her animals are a great resource for bringing joy and healing to people who are hurting. She spends much of her time caring for abused children, helping to build their self-esteem through interaction with the animals at her sanctuary. She has also set up an animal care program in the recently opened Barwon Heads Prison. Tehree manages all this in her senior years and even after being diagnosed with MS six years ago. "I've always believed the elderly citizens, our seniors, have been the foundation of our wonderful country. I think no matter who you are or what your age is, you've got to try for quality of life. There have to be people out there making life easier for other people." For Tehree, being Australian is about giving everyone a fair go. "Australia is great because we accept each other without rhyme or reason. It doesn't matter what colour you are, doesn't matter what your faith is." A brave, selfless and passionate woman, Tehree's love and care for animals and humans alike make her a truly inspirational senior Australian.
