AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR

The Seekers
1967 Award

Chart Topping Singing Group

Judith Durham, Bruce Woodley, Keith Potger and Athol Guy formed The Seekers in 1962 in Melbourne. In 1964 they went to England, where their first single, 'I'll Never Find Another You', went to number one on the popular music charts. Their debut recording met with similar success in Australia and went to number four in the United States of America. In a music scene then dominated by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, who seemed to threaten the established order, The Seekers - non-threatening, joyful and clean-cut - appealed to a more conservative audience. In 1968, at the peak of their success, The Seekers disbanded when Judith Durham left to pursue a solo career.

The New Seekers, formed in 1974 with the original line-up except Durham, had some success. In 1993 The Seekers reformed for a silver jubilee tour and released an album. Senator John Gorton presented their award, commentating: 'Here we have an example of a talent that began as a potential and was by hard work, discipline, effort and perseverance turned into a finished and shining product'. Sir Robert Menzies said that The Seekers were the only musical group he had ever encountered who sang musical tunes and whom he thoroughly understood.
